Children with physical disabilities rarely have access to orthoses in Uganda.
The costs are very high in Uganda and are often beyond the financial means of families.
Pro Uganda is a German non-profit association based in Hesse with the aim, among other things, of giving amputees or physically impaired people in Uganda a new quality of life through a prosthesis.
The work of the association is an active contribution against the social isolation of people who are missing limbs or suffer from deformities.
Previously, these children and young people often had limited access to the community, social contacts or education.
However, as soon as they are properly fitted with prosthetics, they usually find their way back into social normality quickly.
It is possible to make a valuable contribution to inclusion with comparatively simple means.
There are many reasons for the very high amputation rate in developing countries such as Uganda.
Burns are not a rare cause.
However, there are also injuries, accidents, illnesses, etc. Depending on the handicap, an orthosis may also be required.
Families whose children have a deformity or physical disability often travel long distances with them to get help from the Pro Uganda e. V. association.
Because these children want to romp and run like others their age.
If the physical conditions are right, the children and young people receive orthopaedic support here.
Examinations are carried out and plaster casts are made by trained orthopaedic technicians so that an orthosis can then be produced in the orthopaedic workshop.
Physiotherapists are on site to practise and instruct them in the use of the prostheses.
The Karl Bröcker Foundation supports Pro Uganda e. V. financially in providing children and young people with orthoses.
