Learning centre in Steilshoop – individual support for children and young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds

In Steilshoop, a district of Hamburg that faces many structural and social challenges, almost half of the children are growing up with minimum income.
The learning island of Stadtinsel e. V., Hamburg, therefore offers a support program for pupils that is specially tailored to the educational challenges they face. The aim is to specifically identify barriers to learning, promote individual strengths and boost young people’s confidence and motivation.

In 1-to-1 support, mentors accompany the children personally on a weekly basis over the course of a school year. The close relationship strengthens trust and motivation to learn. Regular learning progress analyses help to identify and close gaps in knowledge. Through regular one-to-one support, the children feel increasingly comfortable and build trust in their supporters. Long-term support strengthens the personal relationship of trust, promotes joint learning and individual development. And the important learning successes strengthen the children’s confidence, self-efficacy and future prospects.

As a small highlight for the children, for example, there is also a certificate party. In addition to a small certificate, they receive an encouraging “treasure list” from their mentors, on which the collected positive, appreciative and encouraging character traits can be found, which go beyond pure academic learning success. Or an excursion is organized followed by a pizza dinner, which creates great enthusiasm and a lasting memory. The Karl Bröcker Foundation provides the necessary financial support.
